Job Title: Mechanical Engineer

Reports To (title): Director of Engineering

1. PRIMARY PURPOSE -
Performs work assignments associated with design and development of specific mechanical and optical parts used in classical optical systems from the visible to the NIR range.

2. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES -

  •    Prototype development of optical systems.
  •    Provides the mechanical designs of mounting, jigs, and fabrication tooling used to manufacture and test optical systems. Optical systems with lenses, mirrors, prisms, windows, filters, metal optics. Flat, spherical, aspherical and cylinder ranging in size from 3mm to 16 inches.
  •    Develops designs, drawings, views and specifications for tooled or machined parts, through a working knowledge of CAD and optical design packages, such as Solidworks and Zemax.
  •    Develops component and system specifications to interface machines, hardware and software.
  •    Follows projects from inception, at the concept development stage, to completion, at the product implementation stage.
  •    Assists in the manufacturing and manufacturing process to complete projects
  •    Basic understanding of thin film coatings.
  •    Assist in the development and/or design of tooling used in optical coating and testing.
  •    Working knowledge of ISO and/or Mil spec procedures.
  • 3. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES -

  •    Coach and direct technicians and junior engineers.
  •    Performs hands-on design and assembly of optical systems.
  •    Experience with design for manufacturability and reliability.
  •    Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.
  • 4. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE -

  •    B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  •    5 years experience in the optical field for commercial and/or military industry
  •    3+ years experience in Solidworks
  •    Must have good system design skills
  •    Good Leadership; excellent written and verbal skills
  •    Working knowledge of MS Office programs
  •    Working knowledge of opti-mechanics, and basic optical design skills are highly preferred
  •    Strong experience working with optical materials
  •    Team player capable of working effectively with other engineers of various disciplines
